"Golden Age of Insect Aviation: The Great Grasshoppers"- DONE!!!

"In 1903, Olivia Wright was the first to pilot the great grasshoppers of North America."

Huge thanks to my friend Dave Gottlieb for orchestrating the score!

More 2D planning

(Play above video with sound on!)

Not only do I sometimes plan out my CG animation in 2D, I also sometimes plan out my personal stop-motion projects in 2D.

2D Planning for CG Shots

Because posing a CG character involves manipulating a number of individual controls, it can be slightly time consuming and disrupt the creative flow when first exploring the acting. For this reason, I'll sometimes draw thumbnails of my ideas or make a pose test in 2D before posing the character in CG.

Animation Tips for beginning animators #1-3

When animating on my Nintendo 3DS, I would often be asked by young aspiring artists for advice on animation. So last year, I decided to animate some tips for beginners. This video was made entirely on my 3DS so I apologize for the poor audio quality.

This is a compilation of 3 videos where I talk about:

-Drawing basic forms

-Spacing

-Overlap and Follow Through

(Even though I'm animating on my 3DS using an app called "Butterfly Animation", I wouldn't recommend it for students since its timeline is difficult to use, has a 30fps base frame rate instead of 24fps, and a memory limit of only 100 drawings. Instead, I recommend "Rough Animator" for the iPad for beginners wanting to try animation.)

For Christmas this year, I got a Jurassic Park Velociraptor toy, and even though it's now a few days past Christmas, I decided to make this stopmotion video because I couldn't stop laughing at the idea. Enjoy!

Animated with Stop Motion Studio Pro app on my iPad.

Having fun practicing.

I've been wanting to do some stop-motion animation with my Hulkbuster figure from Beast Kingdom for about a year, and finally had some time this weekend to do it. It's huge for an action figure, and weighed more than my stop-motion rig could support, so I used a desk lamp arm to hold it up during mid-air poses.

Total animation time, not including post-production work, was about 4 hours. Animated this using the Stopmotion Studio app on my iPad. For the background plate, I duct-taped my iPhone to the rear bumper of my Jeep and drove around Burbank. Roto and comp done in Adobe Aftereffects.

One day, I'd like to see if I can get the figure to hit the poses in my 2D planning for a fight with Thanos. We'll see. :) Here's a snippet of the fight:

And here's the animation "stage" I put together in my kitchen for filming at night. The iPad runs the Stopmotion Studio animation app, which can use an iPhone as the remote camera.

Opening shots I animated on "Dinosaur Barbarian".

It was fun coming up with different ways to pummel the bad guys. Threw in a Jurassic Park and Akira reference for good measure. :)

FX animation for the final version by James Mansfield.

Early test I made based on a vis dev painting by James Woods for Kim Hazel's short film "Dinosaur Barbarian".

The style of the short was an homage to energy found in the animated TV show intros of the 80's, so that was my aim. Since it was also the first test of the barbarian riding the dinosaur, I was experimenting with the character movement. Basically I wanted to show that the dinosaur could be really fast, and I also wanted to try this idea that she wanted to be a bird. :)

Eventually this became the end credits. Yay!

Animated my shots in TV Paint.

To celebrate the closing of Mario's 35th anniversary (and the 10th anniversary of the 3DS), I animated this love letter to Super Mario Bros 3 on my Nintendo 3DS using the Butterfly Animation app.

Due to the app's memory constraints, I used cycles, pans, and other tricks to give the impression that there were more than the maximum limit of 99 drawings.

Here's the Rough Anim pass and Cleanup pass prior to color and tone matte pass:

I had already used up all the memory for the animation drawings and audio tracks, and didn't have enough free drawings for the clean up pass on a separate layer, but as long as I had at least one drawing free on a separate layer, I was able to clean up one rough drawing at a time, then replace the rough with the clean up.

The animation is on layers with depth, so if you have the Butterfly Animation app on the 3DS, you can view this movie through the online gallery in stereoscopic 3D!

The soundtrack is Blur's "Song 2 (Odyssey Remix)" by ThePandemicLight which can be viewed here: https://youtu.be/66yH8RZSwUc

Rudy Mancuso is super talented, but what I love about this clip from his Instagram is how his subtext reads so clearly.

As character animators it's good to remember the subtext. It can help clearly communicate to the audience what the character is thinking and feeling.

I love the little details in this clip that communicate his frustration. The clap and finger flexing. "Come on!" The repeated pressing on the key like he's either testing the piano to see if the key works or like he's telling his finger where to go. The wrist flick he does to the right after playing the keys. His posture slowly hunching over the keys showing his focus. And finally, the look he does at camera while his eyes redirect and head then turns away in a staccato motion is perfect. The subtext is screaming out his frustration at this moment. Like he's saying, "Oh my gosh I can't believe this."

So good.

"Space Truck"

Animated entirely on my Nintendo 3DS using the Butterfly Animation app and the Colors 3DS app (for the BG painting).

The animation app has a 100 drawing limit (like an animation haiku hahaha) but those drawings can be reused or timed to any length. Kinda reminds me of the Etch-a-Sketch Animator toy from the 1980's that had a 12 drawing limit but was so fun to play with. :)

"Strongest Avenger"

A few weekends ago, I couldn't sleep, so I decided to mess around with my Thor "Egg Attack Action" figure (EAA-116) from Beast Kingdom. It was a quick super-crude camera setup, which I kept bumping into, and the BG was just green paper tacked to my bulletin board, but I had so much fun animating this little guy!

Enjoy! :)

Animation demo on a video call for a 6 year old who likes animation… a good excuse to draw a dog. :)
